Reagan in his prime would have creamed Obama or any other left winger.

But Obama campaigned to the center and McCain didn't move to the right, and he lost.

Romney would have won, had the "Mormon" thing not been an issue. He was closer to a true conservative, even though governing the most liberal state (the Utah roots would have pulled stronger)

The best thing that can happen to Republicans is the the Democrats can reach 60 in the Senate. Then the GOP will have to really focus on returning to its conservative strength, or they'll be out of power for a long time.
