Many/most 'religious right' and 'hardliners' consider civil unions part of the slippery slope towards same sex marriages. While I agree with your position, I understand their opposition based on principal.

That's why the lawmakers in North Carolina made it very clear in the recent legislation there to disallow BOTH gay marriage and civil unions. They intentionally set it up that way to help thwart any challenges based on 'fairness' issues.

I have also heard many say it is all about the money, ie cost to cover same sex spouses. I'm not sure I buy that one but it might explain why even the left coasters are struggling to get it through. LOL
