The NRA fought Brady and AWB touth & nail (for 13 years), then funded litigation beginning in some 9 different States, which ended with SCOTUS decision in Printz v. United States, 521 U.S. 898, 1997 - NRA was successful with argument that Brady's requirement the States perform background checks was unconstitutional (on 10th Amendment grounds - very comforting to know that the various States cannot be compelled - by Feds - to perform background checks)
Well, AWB "sunset" in 2004, and assault weapons returned - with a vengeance. Despite some limp effort to renew it (in face of omnipresent pressure from NRA), nothing has ever even made it for a vote (few in Congress wish to be "scored", by NRA). Remind me of the further "erosion" to Second Amendment gun rights, occurring in the wake of "Brady" ?
Considering the current state of our so-called "gun laws", my (personal) biggest concern is for the men and women serving in law enforcement. Armor piercing munitions are readily available for purchase, via the internet - in addition to assault weaponry. It is frightening (at least to me) to ponder the lives of such officers, faced with the very real potential of being "outgunned" in the field; knowing that potential; and, knowing they could be facing armor piercing rounds. And, what of escalation required to protect them ? "SWAT" on steroids ?
Frankly, I've never been particularly concerned with "gun control/gun rights" arguments. But, I am beginning (perhaps that's indicative of what I now consider a problem ?) to pay attention. As such, I certainly do not presume to know all the answers (still trying to identify all the questions); but, I would submit, it certainly seems "open range" ain't one (of those.."answers"), L.
