That said, can there be any doubt the comparatively easy availability of such as assault weaponry and armor piercing munitions exposes law enforcement personnel to enhanced level of risk ? Does a society bear some obligation to acknowledge (recognize) that as a real problem, and make some effort to address it? I think to answer to those two questions, as prelude to others, is..."yes". Perhaps you think otherwise, or that those answers represent Quixotic rhetoric (i.e., "shit happens")?
Has the fact that "barn door was left open" enhanced an "arms race" for control of our streets (e.g., "SWAT" on steroids)? What impact may we rationally expect upon the performance of law enforcement personnel (eg., nerves and shot first, ask questions latter?)?
Is all of it simply inevitable, given our love affair with guns (in conjunction with those Second Amendment rights)? Considering the "arms" borne, at the time the Founders embraced that right were - primarily - a "mini-ball" and musket - has the entire history/evolution of our right-to-bear-arms been...an arms race (worth pondering 'what' would the Founders actually think of today's protected 'arms'?)? Will your grandchildren (perhaps even your children), in years-to-come, have a rocket-launcher beside their fire-extinguisher (sound far-fetched? Think your grandfather would have fathomed his neighbor owning an assault weapon ?)?
So, no Doc, currently I have no solution to offer. As I have previously commented, only recently have I paid more than passing attention to "gun rights/gun control" as an issue (arguably, a "poster-child" for awareness contribution ?). In that sense, it seems (to 'moi') a problem in need of some rational - not rhetorical - solutions; and, "open range" (simply because..."it has been") does not seem a rational answer. L.
