Newly elected President Obama took the statesman's approach: find out what's really happening, then act.

In fact the 'Green Revolution' protests were against the election of Ahmadinejad in what was called a "landslide" victory over his principal opponent, Mir Hossein Moussavi. Moussavi was a reform leader, and his opponents claimed that the election was a fraud. That's how the protests began.

But as the clash between protestors and the regime's "police" became increasingly violent and brutal, President Obama did step in with this public speech (excerpted):

"The United States and the international community have been appalled and outraged by the threats, beatings and imprisonments of the last few days..."

IOW, he didn't get involved with the "illegitimate vote" issue, simply because he didn't know whether the ballot was rigged or not. But when the violent reaction of the regime became apparent, he DID step in with condemnation of it, and support for the protests.

That's how statesmen behave, as opposed to shooting from the hip a la Trump.
