Need help with a serious dilemma!!

I have been the proud owner of a beautiful Golden Retriever/Chow mix for nine years now. She developed an intermittent limp several months ago which I had assumed was likely arthritis. Turns out that it is a torn ligament in her knee and the vet is recommending surgery.

You may ask how this relates to the hobby and wtf am I bringing it here for? Well, it's like this, any time I have a major expense I ask myself 'would I rather spend my money on that or a date/dates with an elite companion/companions?' With expenses not deemed as 'necessary' the companion usually wins.

I used to laugh at people who spend thousands on their animals. I always thought they should just let it go. It's a whole lot cheaper to just move on and, if you wish, get another one right?

This is the first critter I've ever owned who has been my constant companion both at home and at work. My biggest regret is that I had her neutered when she was young. How was I to know how special she would be?

Today's vet visit cost me about the price of a standard visit with a favored provider but my companion is well worth it! But here's the rub: I'm facing a $2,000 surgery along with expensive food, meds, and follow up visits.

Meanwhile, my 2 favorite providers have started offering doubles and I would SO love to see them together...especially since the one who is openly 'bi' has told me that the other has surprised her with her enthusiasm in their joint endeavors. OMFG!

My vet has told me that A) there is no guarantee with surgery but it SHOULD improve her condition or B) I could just go with meds & food and limit her mobility for a while and hope for the best.

My options: 1) forego hobbying for the summer and fix the damn dog. 2) go with limited treatment, hobby on, and hope for the best. 3) Shoot the fugking dog!

10 years ago this would have been a no-brainer...shoot the dog and move forward. Now I'm thinking fix the dog, add some sulfer to my diet, and/or cut my balls off!

Maybe I should mount a 'save the dog campaign'...throw me a freebie and save a dog! LOL

Opinions anyone?
